  2. [S213] Dorothy Gaston, "EMAIL Dorothy Gaston," e-mail to Everett Stonebraker, 15 Sept 2013, I'm a direct descendant of Frederick's sister, Maria Magdalene, b. 1798, and Francis' brother, Daniel, b. 1793. The geneological record has been cloouded by researchers who substituted Daniel, b. 1810, for this Daniel, and as a consequence his wife also has disappeared into the ether as far as the genealogies are concerned. This Daniel and his wife removed from Ohio to Perry County Illinois after 1840 but before 1850, leaving the younger Daniel (actually a son of Samuel, another sibling of Daniel and Francis) in Ohio to be misidentified.

The first son of my Daniel Barr and M. Magdalena was named Samuel. In this Germanic community, that would have been the wife's father's name. That is a confirming bit of evidence for her parentage. Daniel Barr 1793 is well documented by probate records. His wife's maiden name is given in his son's biography as Mary M. Stonebraker. I'm copying that biography for you here:
    a BARR, b. 6June1837
    -------------------------------
biography from Portrait & Biographical Album of Mahaska Co., Iowa, 1887
IRA BARR, engaged in general merchandising at Fremont, is a native of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and was born June 6, 1837, being the son of Daniel and Mary M. (Stonebaker) Barr. The parents removed from Ohio to Perry County, Ill., in 1849, remaining there until their death, that of the father occurring in 1857, and his wife's in 1854. Daniel Barr followed the occupation of farming and milling, being an industrious man and a good citizen. The subject of this sketch, after reaching years of manhood, was married in 1857, to Miss Narcissa J. Saunders, who was born in Williamson County, Ill., Sept. 11, 1834, and is the daughter of William and Eliza (Arnold) Saunders. Her father was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and her mother in North Carolina. The former died in Williamson County, Ill., about the year 1845, and the mother resides with the subject of this sketch. Mr. and Mrs. Barr became the parents of three children- Charles M., Erom T. and Lettie A., the first two being deceased. Ira Barr emigrated from Ohio to the northwestern part of Missouri in 1856, where he followed teaching in the winter and farming in the summer. In the fall of 1861 he left Missouri and coming to Warello County, Iowa, operated a farm one year, and in the spring of 1873 came to his present location. He is the surviving member of the old firm of Barr & White, the latter deceased, so long and favorably known in that section of the county in the business of general merchandising. He carries a well-selected stock of about $3,000 worth of goods, is enjoying a good trade, and deserves unlimited prosperity. As a business man and citizen, he is honorable and upright, honest in his dealings with his patrons, personally and socially a genial gentleman, and enjoys the confidence and regard of a host of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Barr are members of the Christian Church. In his political affiliations our subject is Republican, and has held the offices of Justice of the Peace and School Director.

    ----------------------
So that's my link to the two families. Mary M. appears as Magdalena on the 1850 census for Perry County, IL with husband Daniel Barr. The only possible family for her is that of Samuel Steinbrecher and Elizabeth Ann Altvater (lots of spelling variations). Barbara Barr, 2nd wife of Samuel Stonebraker (however you want to spell it) was yet another sibling of Daniel and Francis, so the families were definitely well known to each other.

I found it extremely difficult to research the two families due to the variations in spelling. I found Barr as Bar, Bare, Bear Behr, Barre, Berry, and I found Stonebraker as Steinbrecher (probably original speling), Stonebaker, Steinbraker, etc. They don't all follow in alphabetical lists or indices.

There is good research for the Barr line in "Emigrants,Refugees and Prisoners" By Richard Warren Davis Vol lll,.
